Official Press Release

Guppies Harpoon The Whalers 15-5

Glastonbury, CT April 7, 2004. ZRink - Killingworth Guppies Spring 2004 season.

04/07/04 - The Killingworth Guppies faced off Wednesday night against the Whalers in a late night affair in Glastonbury. The Whalers reminded several Guppy players of the early days in the Killingworth organization as the Whalers had youth on their side. The Whalers would strike first before Tom Mierkiewicz (1-1-2) would bury the equalizer. The Whalers kept on coming, as the Guppies seemed to be asleep, and would regain the one goal lead. Tim Poulin (4-2-6) would score his first of the night when he buried a pass from Brian Kelly (1-5-6). John Carroll (1-0-1) would score for the Gupps as they took their first lead of the game but again the Whalers were equal to the task tying the game at Three. Brian Mulcahy (4-0-4) buried his first two goals on the night as the Guppies started to pull away. Both Poulin and Kelly would add scores to give the Gupps the 7-3 lead at the half.

Early in the Second Half a Whalers player took a run at Rob Murphy (2-4-6) in front of the Guppies bench. Murphy took exception to the hit and the two were penalized. Playing 3 on 3 for two minutes the Whalers took advantage of the open dek and scored twice to make it 7-5. With the lead cut to two goals the Guppies finally woke up and started to pour it on. Poulin and Dave Armenia (1-0-1) would score Power Play goals as the Guppies regained their four goal lead. Murphy made the Whalers pay, for the cheap shot, by scoring on that same power play. Mulchay would net two more goals off of assists from Kelly and Dan Pequita (0-3-3). With the score 12-5 the Guppies were thinking of going for the Mercy kill (10 goal lead) Poulin and Murphy would score again to make it 14-5. Jason Zito (1-4-5) finally put the Harpoon in the Whalers scoring the Guppies 15th goal of the game with 4:18 left in the second half. The Guppies are off next week but they will be returning on April 21st for another 11:00pm game vs BluBaz. This will be the Guppies second and last late night game of the season. Tickets are still available!
