Official Game Summary |
Glastonbury, CT July 3, 2008. ZRink - Killingworth Guppies Summer 2008 season.
07/03/08- America's favorite nonprofessional
sports franchise was looking to help America start celebrating her 4th of July
birthday early as they faced off against their long time rivals, the Fire Ants.
The first period saw a tight checking game as both teams were playing with short
benches. The Guppies had an early power play and failed to convert.
Mike Halle, playing in his first Guppies game of the season found his skating
legs after a couple of shifts and picked up his first penalty of the season,
a roughing minor which gave the Fire Ants a power play midway through the first
period which the Guppies killed off. The Guppies would get on the board
first as Tim Poulin (1-2-3) also making his first appearance for the Guppies
this season streaked down the right wing and blistered a slap shot past the
Fire Ant net minder. The Fire Ants would respond with their first goal
late in the first period tying the game at 1-1. The Guppies would take
a 2-1 lead going into half time as Rob Murphy (1-0-1) scored on pass from Keith
Millen (1-1-2).
Joe Linskey, looking to redeem himself after last weeks debacle started the second period with a myriad of saves, many of which were deflections from his own teammates. The Fire Ants would eventually tie the game at 2-2. The Guppies would respond as Keith Millen scored to give the Guppies a short-lived 3-2 lead. As is usually the case, no Guppies lead is safe and the Fire Ants would score 3 minutes later to tie the game 3-3. The Fire Ants would score again 3 minutes later to give them a 4-3 lead. The lead would not last long as Marc Crayton (1-0-1) would score a goal set up by Jason Zito (0-1-1) and Tim Poulin making the score 4-4. The Guppies continued to apply the pressure as Dave Armenia, Keith Millen and Tim Poulin cycled the puck ringing a shot off the post and just missing an open net rebound as the Fire Ant net minder was caught out of position.
The Guppies would go on a man advantage with 2:38 remaining in the game. The Guppies would squander the power play opportunity and give up a game winning short-handed goal. A Guppies fan was overheard leaving the game saying, "Man, I don't think I've seen them loose one like that. That made me throw up in my mouth."
The Guppies face off next Thursday night (7/10) against the Jimmy Stickhandle team at 8pm. Tickets for this game are on sale now at the Zrink, the Killingworth Library and the Circle Store. Come on out. Get your Guppies gear @ http://www.cafepress.com/guppies
