Guppies Win 8th League Championship: Beat Fire Ants 6-5!

Glastonbury, CT May 29, 2007. ZRink - Killingworth Guppies Spring 2007 season.

05/29/2007- The FireAnts and Guppies faced off for the 5th time this season on Tuesday night. The Guppies held a slight lead in the season series going 2-1-1. However, the fifth meeting was the biggest as it was for the B-League Championship. Things didn't start well for the Gupps as the Fire Ants took the 1-0 lead early in the first. The Guppies managed to tie the game minutes later as Dan Pequita (2-0-2) scored his first of the night. After the Pequita goal, the tide turned and the Fire Ants took control of the game. However, Joe Linskey made some great saves to help keep the Guppies in the game. The Ants continued the pressure and scored twice in the final ten minutes of the half to take a commanding  3-1 lead.

In the Second Half, the Guppies found some new life as the Fire Ant's Matt Zuba took a elbowing penalty. On the subsequent Power Play  Dan Pequita scored to cut the Ants lead to one. The goal sparked the Guppies bench,  especially Brian Mulcahy (1-2-3) and Keith Millen (2-1-3).  Millen would set up Mulcahy to tie the game at three. Less than a minute later Mulcahy returned the favor as Millen gave the fish their first lead of the night.  The Guppies kept coming at the Ants.  Rob Murphy (1-2-3) scored on  a rebound to make it 5-3 Guppies. Then Brian Kelly (0-3-3) hit Millen with a long pass that lead to the Gupps 6th goal of the night.  Killingworth had just scored five unanswered goals to take a 6-3 lead and control of the game. However, like they often do the Guppies let the Ants back into the game.  The Fire Ants scored with just under three minutes left to make it 6-4. The Ants gave the Guppies a really scare when Zuba  banked a shot off of Linskey from the behind the goal line in the right corner of the rink with just .53 seconds remaining.  The Guppies held on in the final seconds to beat the Fire Ants and capture the 2007 Spring Championship.

The Guppies 8th Championship was there first championship since the Spring 2005 season. It's also their first championship since moving to Puck. In the previous four seasons in puck the Guppies have lost in three Championship games. Two of which were lost in OT! (Spring 2005 and Summer 2006).  Congrats to all the players, coaches, trainers, fans, and mascots of the Killingworth Guppies Organization!
