Official Press Release |
Glastonbury, CT May 23, 2004. ZRink - Killingworth Guppies Spring 2004 season.
5/23/04- The Guppies were again short handed as they faced off Sunday Afternoon against the Fireballs. Brian Mulcahy, Rob Murphy, and Jason Zito's were healthy scratches and Tom Mierkiewicz's was on the Beach enjoying his retirement. The Guppies were caught off guard as the Fireballs scored twice in the first eight minutes of the game. The Guppies were also being out shot at one point 13-2!! However, like they have in the past three games the Guppies picked themselves and fought back. Tim Poulin (3-0-3) would lead the comeback as he scored after Dan Pequita (1-3-4) fed him a pass through the neutral zone. The Fireballs would answer the Guppies tally by scoring their third goal of the game. Pequita would score to cut the lead to one with a little over a minute left in the half. The Gupps would tie the score at three when Poulin would score his second goal of the game, with Mike Halle (0-1-1) picking up the assist. At the end of the First half the Guppies were being out shot but managed to keep the game close on the Strong play of Joseph Linskey in the Guppies net.
In the Second Half the Fireballs would again take the one goal lead three minutes in. However, the Guppies would tie the game at four when Pequita threaded a pass through the Fireballs defense allowing Brian Kelly (1-0-1) to tap in his first of the night. With just over Five minutes left Poulin would give the Guppies their first lead of the night. With the Guppies up 5-4, John Carroll was called for high sticking. On the Power play the Fireballs would tie the score at Five. About a minute later, The Fireballs would take a goal off a shot that never went in the net! The Refs gave the Balls a goal when the a shot hit off the crossbar and then the post but never crossed the line. "Several spectators watching the game said the ball never went into the net but these things happen" stated Guppies defenseman Mike Halle. With the Guppies painfully aware that the game winning goal was scored off a shot that hit the crossbar they started to fall apart. The Fireballs scored twice in the final minute to hand the Guppies their first lost in 2004. The Guppies have the Memorial week off and will return to action on Wednesday June 2nd at 9pm vs the Brick Road Brawlers!
