Official Press Release

Guppies Fight Past The Brick Road Brawlers 9-6

Glastonbury, CT May 16, 2004. ZRink - Killingworth Guppies Spring 2004 season.

5/16/04- With the Guppies well aware that this was Tom Mierkiewicz's last game, the team was determined not to loss to a tough Brick Rd Brawlers team. The Guppies also went into the game short handed as several players were healthy scratches. Before the Guppies new what was happening the Brawlers had the Guppies in a 2-0 hole as Flynn scored twice. The Guppies tried to regroup and get back into the game before things got worse. Rob Murphy (3-1-4) lead the charge when he scored off of a pass from Brian Kelly (3-2-5). A minute later Dan Pequita (1-1-2) deflected a point shot from Tom Mierkiewicz's (1-2-3) into the Brawlers net. The Brawlers had a quick answer when Flynn beat Joe Linskey for  his third goal of the game. The Guppies swam back to take the lead as Murphy and Kelly scored only seconds apart. Kelly would score a shorthanded goal with little over 4 minutes remaining after a great effort from Murphy to feed Kelly in front of the Brawler's net. The Guppies held the two goal lead at the half and were starting to gain an upper hand on the Brawlers.

Murphy would score again, to start the second half, as he blasted a pass from Dave Armenia (0-1-1) past the Brawlers netminder. The Brawlers kept up the fight as Grondin scored the next two goals  five minutes apart. Kelly would score his third of the night on an end to end rush half way through the Second. The Brawler's called a time out with just under 5 minutes remaining. However,  John Carroll (1-0-0)  hurt any chance of a comeback when he fired a shot from the point that eluded the keeper. Mierkiewicz's put the final nail in the coffin when he scored off a nice shot from the left face-off circle. With 1:32 remaining Brown would score for the Brawlers but at that point the game was over.

Sunday's game was the last for Tom Mierkiewicz with the Guppies. Tom joined the team in 2002 and was a solid defensive presence for the Gupps since his arrival. Tom's Teammates are sad to see him go but are also happy because of his new opportunity in New York City. The Fans were out in force Sunday to lent their support to Mierk for one final time. The team also held a post game dinner in Tom's honor. Mierk is a certainly a future Hall of Fame Candidate and he will be missed in the games and in the locker room. The Killingworth Guppies and the town of Killingworth would like to thank Tom for everything he has done for this organization and wish him the best of luck in the future!

SIDENOTES:

- Tim Poulin, Jason Zito, and Mike Halle were all healthy scratches on Sunday. All should be back in the line up for next weeks game.

- Slow Starts!! In the past two games Joe Linskey has given up 7 goals on 8 shots! Linskey has seen his Career low GAA (goals against average) blow up to near a Career high (5.40) in the past two games.

- Fast Starts!! Rob Murphy has shown up the last two games during warm-ups and has been able to get changed in time and not miss a shift. Many of his teammates are convinced that he has a hockey equipment suit.
