GUPPIES SEND THE ROAD DOGS PACKING WINNING 5-3

11/22/02 As the Guppies skated out onto the dek Friday night they got ready to play one of the biggest games of the season. With the Quicksilver winning again earlier in the evening and the Guppies playing the Road Dogs the stage was set. A Guppies win and they retain sole possession of first place in the B-league. If they lose then there would be a three way tie for first between them, the Road Dogs, and the Quicksilver. The fight for first place began right at the starting face-off. The Guppies would strike first as Brian Mulcahy(1-0-1) scored of a great play and set up from Jason Zito(2-1-3) and Mike Szwed(0-1-1). A few minutes later "the captain" Brian Kelly(2-1-3) would score on a great individual play which left a Road Dog's defensemans jock spinning some where on the Blue Line. Later in the first Zito scored his first of the night giving the Guppies and 3-0 lead. However, the Road Dogs weren't about to let down as they scored twice in the final seconds of the first period. At the half the Guppies were reeling from the Road Dogs pressure and were trying to regroup. It didn't work as the Road Dogs came out fired up in the second half scoring the tying goal early in the Second period. With the score tied at 3 and the tide going the Road Dogs way it was time for the Guppies to fight back. The Guppies peppered the Road Dog's netminder time and time again but were rebuffed by one outstanding save after another. "That kid was standing on his head and making saves" explained Guppies defenseman John Carroll(0-1-1). Midway through the second Kelly would bury a pass from Marc Crayton(0-1-1) giving the Guppies the one goal lead. Later in the period the Guppies would lose Brian Mulcahy when he was hit in the mouth with a High Stick. From that point on Killingworth ran three forwards and four defensemen while the Road Dogs looked for the equalizer. The Dogs had several opportunities to score on Joe Linskey(18 shots - 15 saves) but they were turned aside. The Guppies finally put the Road Dogs away for good when Zito deflected a shot by Brian Kelly past the sprawling Road Dogs goalie. The goal secured the Guppies fifth straight win of the season (their 17th overall) and sole posession of first place. The Guppies have next week off and would like to wish all their American fans a Happy Thanksgiving!! The Gups are in action again on December 6th at 700pm vs the Red Army.
