- Gary Colman Project Edge Out Guppies In Sudden Death Over Time

9-8 to take their first Z-Rink Championship -

Glastonbury, CT July 2th, 2003. ZRink - Killingworth Guppies spring 2003 season.

7-2-03 The GCP and Killingworth Guppies faced off Wednesday night for B-league supremacy. The game was an instant classic (Sat 9pm -Espn Classic) as the two teams battle back an forth. The GCP was looking for their first ever Championship an the perfect season as the Gupps were looking for their 3rd Z-rink Championship and the 5th team Championship. Despite a great game, the championship was decided on a referees call late in the third period which led to the GCP overtime tally. However, the Guppies jumped out quickly in this one when Tim Poulin(4-2-6) buried a pass from Jason Zito(1-3-4) just :39 seconds into the first. The GCP would take the lead midway through the first when Lair and Healey both scored :27 seconds apart. Poulin would respond scoring the tying goal a minute later off a deflection of a Tom Mierkiewicz(0-3-3) shot. Poulin and Zito would hook up again giving the Guppies the one goal lead. Rob Murphy(1-0-1) would bury a pass from Brian Kelly(1-3-4) giving the Gupps the two goal lead. The Guppies continued the offensive pressure when Zito beat the GCP netminder for the three goal lead. However, with 1:34 left in the first Murphy accidentally high sticked Lair in the face causing him to bleed. The incident left the Guppies killing a 5 minute major and was cause for Murphy's ejection from the game. At the half the Gupps were up 5-3. To start the second the Guppies were still killing the 5 minute major when the GCP scored to make it a two goal game. Seconds later, in what can be described as the stupidest penalty ever, Marc Crayton was called for highsticking but he was hit with the High Stick, NICE CALL REF, now how about watching the game! On the 4 on 2 the GCP would score again to make it a 1 goal game. However, Goals from Marc Crayton(1-0-1) and Poulin would give the Gupps the three goal lead again. The GCP would go on to score the next three goals as the Guppies started collapsing into their on zone. With 4:57 left in the game the score was tied at seven. Minutes later the Guppies would capitalize on a GCP turn over in the Guppies zone, sending Poulin and Kelly in on a 2 on 1. Poulin fake a shot and slid a pass over to Kelly who roofed it in for the 8-7 lead with just over 2 minutes left in the game. However, as they did all night, to their credit, the GCP found a way to tie the score with 1:39 remaining. The teams played tight during the final seconds until another awful Referee call gave the GCP a power play with :28 seconds remaining (You guess it the same REF!!) "How you make a call like that with 28 seconds left in a championship game??" a confused Rob Murphy asked after the game "I could see if Kelly had taken away a scoring opportunity but they were both going for the ball" Kelly also had trouble with the call "Thats a tough call to make in a tied Championship game w/28 seconds left, but I guess if you are a moron it's not to tough" The Gupps headed into the overtime shorthanded and with little doubt that they could win this game. However, it was not to be as the GCP scored just 10 seconds into the Overtime. No discredit to the GCP they are a good team but the Championship was actually won by a refs call. The Killingworth faithful went crazy after the game last night and there have been several reports of Cow tipping. Not lost in the confusion should be the fact that Joseph Linskey was just great in the Guppies net, stopping several GCP scoring opportunities. The Killingworth Guppies would like the thank their fans and sponsors for the support this season and we hope to see you again next season. Congratulations to the Spring 2003 Ball B Champions- The Gary Coleman Project great job this year guys!!!
