Official Press Release |
Glastonbury, CT July 27, 2011. ZRink - Killingworth Guppies Summer 2011 season.
07/27/2011- Wednesday night's match up between the Guppies and ESPN, turned into a laugher....and quickly. ESPN was undermanned as they only had three skaters and a goalie to start the game. A fourth skater would arrive shortly to put ESPN at "full strength" but a 5th skater wouldn't arrive until the half. The Guppies tried to avoid being overly excited about their newly found "stat night" and went on the offensive. (Normally, I would break down the scoring here with great detail. However, it was an onslaught and I believe it could and would get boring to read. I'll just hit some highlights. Below is the box score, you can read up on the scoring there.) It didn't take long for the Fish to grab the game winning goal as Lagana picked up the garbage in front of the ESPN net. Things got interesting just under five minutes in, when Brian Blair started a commotion in front of the ESPN net. Blair took on two members of the opposing team, at one point high sticking one in the face. He avoided being ejected but did earn two minutes in the Sin bin. The exact details of what happened are sketchy but, there seemed to be misunderstanding with which stick belonged to whom? Blair wasn't done as he received another penalty only minutes later. "It was like Blair channeled his inner Stu Grimson tonight" explained Guppies Net minder Joe Linskey. Guppies Assistant Captain Marc Crayton added "It reminded me of vintage Blair on the tennis courts back at Morgan!" finally Guppies defenseman Dan Pequita summed it up best "It's always the quiet ones!" The Guppies went on to score 6 First Half goals for the 6-0 lead.
In the Second, it was much of the same, well except for the Blair penalties, the Guppies carried the play. Tim Poulin would score the all important seventh goal of the game, meanwhile, Marc Crayton got into the penalty business himself, with a late altercation in which he slashed a ESPN opponent. Joe Linskey had a very slow night, facing only 13 shots. Even with the addition of the dreaded "Cody" Linskey performed well! That Sports Psychologist must be working. Dan Pequita finally ended this awful game when he scored with just under four minutes remaining. The Guppies completed the Mercy victory then headed to the parking lot to celebrate with the fans!
The Guppies will have a tougher go of it next week as they face off against Jail Bait (Linksey's favorite team). Game time is 8pm and Tickets are available!
SIDE NOTES:
- Dave Armenia was a Scratch Wednesday night
- Rob Murphy made his return to the Guppies lineup after his recent bout with Cancer....Nice to have you back Murph!
- Poulin learned the key to bringing the beer is actually buying it then bringing it to the rink. TPo was on beer Wednesday night but came to the rink empty handed. He went to purchase beer after the game and returned 25min later. Luckily Murph had brought some back up!
- The Guppies post game cookout was a huge success! Much thanks to Brian Blair for stepping up and actually bringing his grill. It was a Gupgrade from the normal mini grill the Guppies have used in the past.
