Official Press Release |
Glastonbury, CT June 15, 2011. ZRink - Killingworth Guppies Spring 2011 season.
06/15/2011-The Guppies opened up their 2011 Summer Campaign against the team they beat in last season Semifinals, Jailbait. Despite a strong push by Jailbait (JB) early on the Guppies would strike first, when Jon Stevenson (1-0-1) did a 360 (while falling to the dek) and fired a low shot 5-hole. Things got better for the Fish when JB took the first penalty of the game. The Guppies, looking to make quick work of Jailbait and going to the bar, pulled Marc Crayton (0-1-1) off the Dek in favor of Stevenson. The result? A Tim Poulin (1-1-2) back door tap in goal just 9 seconds into the Power Play! Dave Armenia commented on the Guppy's power play effectiveness "It almost looked liked they knew what they were doing out there! It's all about smoke and mirrors with us." Jailbait would score midway through the Half to cut into the Guppies lead. After that point it became a goaltending duel for the remainder of the half, with Guppies fill-in netminder "Sammy the Goalie" making several key saves. At the half 2-1 Guppies!
The Guppies struck first in the Second, when Keith Millen (1-2-3) won an offensive face-off draw back to Brian Kelly (3-1-4), who fired a slap shot into the net. The Fish kept coming as moments later, as Crayton turned in a great individual effort to win the puck in the corner and feeding a perfect pass to Mike Lagana (1-1-2) in the high slot. Lagana walked in and fired a shot past the JB keeper Jailbait tried to mount a comeback as they would score the next two goals, cutting the Guppies lead to 4-3. The Guppies worked to regain the multi goal cushion. Their work paid off as Kelly and Poulin made a great give and go play that led to Kelly's second goal of the night. The push continued and again it was Kelly scoring, with a high wrist shot to the glove side (Top Cheese!! as Keith Millen would say). Late in the Half, Jailbait pulled their goalie, however, they were unable to beat Sammy. In the final moments of the game, Kelly found himself skating into the JB's zone with the puck on a 3-on-1 with Millen and Lagana. "I thought about shooting there" admitted Kelly "However, I figured that would be a jerk (aka Millen type) move. I was hoping to pass it to Mikey (Lagana) but the defenseman took away that passing lane so, Millen was my only option". Millen fired the pass into the empty net.....Guppies win 7-3!
The schedule is not out yet. However, plan on a Guppies game next Wednesday 6/22. Check back often for updates! That means you Danny, there will be no "Courtesy" calls!
