Official Game Summary |
Glastonbury, CT July 23, 2009. ZRink - Killingworth Guppies Summer 2009 season.
07/23/2009- In a statement earlier on Thursday morning Guppie's Assistant Captain Rob Murphy, who recently returned from a short stint out in the California Semi-Pro League, made a bold and daring statement "I guarantee a Guppie's victory tonight" stated Murphy. If you looked at the fact that the Guppies had just lost their last four games it's a very bold statement. However, if you look at the fact that the Guppies were returning Murphy, Keith Millen, and Tim Poulin, arguably the Guppies top three players, into the line-up then it doesn't seem so bold. The Guppies also got lucky Thursday night as UConn was very shorthanded with only four skaters. Dan Pequita started the scoring as he gave the Guppies the 1-0 lead just over a minute into the game. However, the Huskies answered and rattled off the next FIVE goals!! Down 5-1 Murphy was looking more like a goat than Mark Messier! The Guppies were scrambling but four Goals by Millen, Poulin, Jon Stevenson, and Brian Kelly allowed the Guppies to tie the game at five. The two teams traded goals at the end of the half for a 6-6 tie at the midway point.
Thursday night mark the return of goaltender Joe Linskey who was making his first start after recovering from broken ribs. Linskey looked shaky early on but pulled his game together in the Second Half. The Guppies also picked up their game in the Second rattling off eight more goals just burying the tired and overwhelmed Uconn defense corp.
The Win stopped the Guppies slide and will hopefully lead to some more W's. If there are more wins in the Guppies future they won't be easy to come by as the face off against Jimmy Stickhandle next week. Game time is 10pm and tickets are still available.
SIDE NOTES:
- Jason Zito and Brian Mulcahy were healthy scratches
- Brian Blair surprised the Guppies Thursday night as he made an unscheduled appearance. Blair hasn't attended a Guppies game since 2001. Many current players never even met Blair prior to Thursday night. When asked to comment on meeting the former Guppies defenseman/hall of famer Dan Pequita stated "it was a thrill! I've heard the stories and now I got to meet the man. He's a living legend in this organization!".
- With the victory, Joe Linskey is the only Guppies netminder with a winning record (1-0-0) however, his GAA is the highest of the three netminder's at 10.00.
- There were NO penalties called in Thursday night's game
