Official Game Summary |
Glastonbury, CT July 10, 2007. ZRink - Killingworth Guppies Summer 2007 season.
07/10/2007- It was a tough night for our heroes as they faced off against the Ball Smashers, who last season were the leagues door mat but have had a solid Summer session. Both teams came into the game undefeated at 3-0. With first place on the line this was going to be a battle. The Guppies started out strong controlling the game early. However, things changed suddenly, when the Smashers scored on their first shot on net. It got worse when the Ball Smashers second shot on net beat Linskey again. The Guppies were down 2-0 after two shots and less than 5minutes of hockey. Linskey tried to explain what happened in a post game interview. "It's hard to play net in the Summer because it's so hot inside the rink. Not to mention my defensemen weren't (as Linskey explained his rough start I notice a conductor walking up to a podium....tap, tap, tap....then the violins began to play.....Waa, Wa, Waa, Wa, Waa, Waa Waa WAA!) helping me out." The Guppies got some offense going as Marc Crayton (1-0-1) tapped in some garbage that Brian Mulcahy (0-1-1) left in front of the net. As the half went on Linskey seemed to settle in and made some solid saves. Meanwhile on the other end the Smashers goalie was standing on his head matching Linskey every step of the way.
In the Second Half, penalties killed the Guppies momentum. The Smashers started the second half scoring, on the Power Play, when a shot that trickled into the net. "It sucks because they didn't score any solid goals tonight, they were all BS type of goals" vented Tim Poulin after the game. The Guppies got a Power Play goal of their own when Poulin (0-2-2) fed Keith Millen (2-0-2) for his first of the night. Down 3-2, The Guppies would take another penalty that resulted in a Smashers goal. The Guppies stepped it up a notch and were pressuring the Smashers when Mulcahy was given a roughing penalty with just over four minutes remaining. The Guppies managed to kill the penalty and scored with just under 2minutes remaining. However, in the end the Fish ran out of time and couldn't get the equalizer.
The Guppies face off next Friday night 7/20 at 9pm vs the Z-Selects! It a rare Friday night game and Family ticket plans are available.
SIDE NOTES:
- The Guppies had a full Roster Tuesday night.
- Joe Linskey expressed interest about selling out the remainder of the summer season to Guppies back-up netminder Andy Pettola. The Killingworth front office was quick to point out that Linskey is under contract. However, the Guppies Players Union Rep Marc Crayton said he plans on talking to Joe this week about his options.
- Goal Troubles! Despite the Guppies high amount of goals for, the team has several players struggling to find the net. Keith Millen (11) and Tim Poulin (6) combine for half of the teams 34 goals in their first four games. Zito and Murphy have chipped in but Kelly and Pequita continue to struggle as either have two goals on the season.
- It official! John Carroll's #2 will be heading to the rafters. The Killingworth Guppies announced the decision prior to last nights game. Carroll's # 2 will join Greg Bousquet (99), Tim Gessner (5), Joel Burenski (8), and Pete Fink (9) in the Guppies Hall of Fame. Carroll beat out former Guppie defensemen Tom Mierkiewicz and Brian Blair for the honor.
