Guppies Extinguish Fire Ants Playoff Hopes 8-5!

Glastonbury, CT September 4, 2007. ZRink - Killingworth Guppies Summer 2007 season.

09/4/2007- The Guppies faced off against the Fire Ants Tuesday night in the B-League Semi-finals game after the Spartans dropped out of the Playoffs. Despite coming in 5th place with a 4-7-0 regular season record the Ants are always dangerous. That's one thing Guppie players and fans have learned from past experiences. Marc Crayton (1-0-1) got the Guppies offense going scoring just over two minutes into the game. The Fire Ants responded and tied the game at one, midway through the half. Only seconds later, Mike Halle (0-2-2) took a shot that went wide of the net, "If Gil was shooting on a soccer net he still would have missed it with that shot" laughed Guppies forward Dave Armenia. However, Mike's wide left shot came off the boards and right to Dan Pequita, who fired the puck into the Ant's net. The Guppies added to their lead as Brian Kelly  (1-0-1) scored a Power Play goal, after the Ant's Matt Zuba took a elbowing penalty. The Ants scored to make it a 3-2 game late in the half, they also received a power play after Brian Mulcahy took two separate minor penalties. The Guppies made the most of their Penalty Kill as Keith Millen (3-0-3) scored shorthanded to give the Fish the two goal lead again.

The Second Half could have started better for the Gupps as the Ants scored less than a minute in to make it a 4-3 game.  Keith Millen stepped into the Guppies Record books when he scored his second goal of the night. Millen passed Tim Poulin's Single Season Record for Goals, with his 30th goal of the season. Keith's goal also gave the Guppies the two goal lead yet again. The Fish started to create some room between them and the Ants when Mulcahy (1-0-1) scored on a delayed penalty. The Fire Ants kept coming and scored again to keep the Guppies within striking distance. However, Tim Poulin's (1-2-3) goal midway through the half seemed to dash any hopes for a Fire Ant's comeback. Millen scored his third goal of the night with only :17 remaining as the Gupps went on to win the game 8-5!

The Guppies will face off against the Ball Smashers in the Finals this Sunday night at 7pm. The Guppies and Ball Smashers traded 4-3 victories this season. In their last meeting the Guppies came back from a 3-0 deficit to beat the Smashers late in the game. Tickets for the 2007 Finals go on sale Thursday at noon.
