Ball Smashers Bounce Past Guppies 4-2!
Glastonbury, CT May 23, 2006. ZRink - Killingworth Guppies Spring 2006 season.
May 23, 2006 - The Guppies came out on Tuesday night looking to wrap up the regular season on a positive note. They were able to wrap up first place with a victory over the Seawolves only 48 hours prior. The Ball Smasher were looking to stay above .500 and send a message to the Guppies, as it was predetermined that these two teams would also meet in the first round of the playoffs (Tuesday 5/30 9pm). The Guppies took control early and looked to take the one goal lead just minutes into the game when a shot from Jason Zito hit the inside the right post but never crossed the line. Joe Linskey was back in form, after Sunday's game, as he made several great saves early on. Scoring was tough to come by as both Linskey and his counterpart were equal to the task. The Ball Smasher would get on the board first beating Linskey at the midpoint of the first half. The Guppies tried to get the equalizer but they were turned aside time and time again. Late in the half, the Guppies Captain, Brian Kelly, would make an awful line change which lead to a 3-0 opportunity for the Smashers. They would score to make it 2-0! The Guppies would out shoot the Smashers but at the end of the first they had nothing to show for their efforts.
In the Second Half the Ball Smashers took control of the game scoring less than two minutes into the half on a 2 on 1 down low. The Guppies controlled most of the play in the second half but still couldn't buy a goal. Finally, Keith Millen scored when Dan Pequita made a pass and sent Millen in alone on the Smasher's netminder. Down 3-1, the Guppies made a push to get themselves back in the game. However, the Smashers delivered a major blow to the Guppies comeback when they scored their fourth goal of the night. Dan Pequita would score with 1:44 remaining but it proved to be to little to late. In the final seconds of the game Kelly was hit with a "baseball" type swing to the head. Kelly took exception to the hit and the two teams game together. The Refs were able to remove Kelly and restore peace as the game was call w/.19 seconds remaining.
The first place Guppies will face off against the 4th place Ball Smashers again this Tuesday night (5/30) at 9pm. Tickets for the game go on sale on Friday morning at 10am.
SIDE NOTES:
- Guppies had a full roster
- The other playoff game Tuesday night will feature the 2nd place Canadiens vs the 3rd place Fire Ants, Game time is 10pm.
- Tim Poulin's "Guppies World Tour" stop in Israel was a huge success! Poulin seemed to be a bit tired from all the autograph sessions, photo shoots, and meet and greets while over seas. Not to mention that time change thing can be tough too!
