Guppies Beat Evil Sports 6-4 to Capture 7th Team Championship!

Glastonbury, CT June 10, 2005. ZRink - Killingworth Guppies Spring 2005 season.

June 10, 2005 - As the Guppies and Evil sports faced off last night for the Zrink Ball Championship many were unsure what to expect. The last time these two teams faced off the game was scarred with Penalties and cheap shots. The Game was never close as the Guppies went on to beat Evil Sports 9-1, however with the Championshipon the line Evil Sports was determined to make this a much closer game. ES would open up the scoring when Materkowski beat Guppies netminder Joe Linskey on the Sport's second shot of the game. The Guppies regroup and tied the game at one when Brian Kelly (2-1-3) fired a shot from the point that eluded ES goaltender Shawn Burke. Kelly would score again only moments later to give the fish the one goal lead. However, Evil Sports stepped up their game and rattled off the next three goals to give them the 4-2 lead late in the first half. The Guppies looked down and out but with .15 seconds remaining in the half Dan Pequita (2-2-4) scored to cut ES lead to one.

In the Second Half the Guppies were determined to regain the lead. However, Burke was solid in the ES net and turned aside several Guppie opportunities. At the 15:06 mark, Tim Poulin (1-1-2) tapped in a rebound past Burke to tie the game at four. Over the next three minutes the Guppies would take control of the game. At the 13:44 mark, Poulin set up Pequita for his second of the night. Just over a minute later Kelly found Jason Zito (1-2-3) alone in the high slot. JZ buried the one timer past Burke to give the Guppies the 6-4 lead. Evil Sports had several good scoring chances late but Linskey was flawless down the stretch.

Both teams played a strong spirit game with the none of the BS from their first contest. The Result was a great hockey game that was an instant classic. Look for a replay of the championship game on 6/11 at 7:00pm on ESPN Classic.
